Mississippi River Steamboat Mural at 550 Landmarks Blvd
Artist: Mike Eckhardt, Muralist: Rip Kastaris
Dedicated: 2010

Visible from Henry Street between Broadway and Landmarks Blvd., this attractive four-story mural is painted on the brick building that houses Riverbend Headstart & Family Services and Alton Community Unit School District 11. Mike Eckhard designed a captivating tribute to Alton’s rich riverboat heritage depicting a paddlewheel steamboat gracefully navigating the Mississippi River. It was brought to life by artist Rip Kastaris in 2010. Sponsored by the Alton-Godfrey Rotary Club with donations from community organizations and businesses, the mural serves as a testament to community spirit and patriotism, featuring a heartfelt message beneath the artists’ signatures: “God bless America and the Children of the Riverbend.” The mural’s completion, marked by a public dedication ceremony, was a collaborative effort that engaged local children in adding fish stamps to the base, adding a charming final touch.
