Mile Davis Statue at 117 West 3rd Street

Sculptor: Preston Jackson

Dedicated: September 2015

The life-sized statue of Miles Davis overlooking a pocket park on West 3rd Street was a passion project of the Miles Davis Memorial Project headed by The Miles Davis Jazz Committee of the Alton Museum of History and Art and Pride, Inc. The project committee, chaired by Pat Ackmann and Karen Wilson, raised over $120,000 through selling personalized bricks and crowdfunding on the website Indiegogo. The statue celebrates the life and career of Davis, who was born in Alton and was created by Sculptor Preston Jackson. The base of the statue features names of other famous jazz musicians and legends. During his speech before the unveiling, Jackson spoke of being inspired by Davis’ music throughout his career. Best known for his work with bronze castings, Mr. Jackson’s acclaimed works of art can be found throughout Illinois.
