In January 1935, eight employees of the Shell Refinery in Wood River, IL, banded together to form Shell Wood River Federal Credit Union. The eight deposited a total of $57.00. The credit union was established to provide low-cost financial services to Shell employees and their families. Over the years other groups have joined our field of membership.
In June 2000, the Board of Directors decided to chart a new course for the credit union, one that would enable us to continue to grow and to stay competitive by providing new and better services for our membership. A Community Charter was a major step in that direction. This charter will enable us to diversify by adding new members throughout Madison County, Ill. Today anyone who lives, works or attends school in Madison County, Ill, is eligible to join.
To better reflect our field of membership in October 2001, the Board of Directors decided to make another change. A name change- Shell Community Federal Credit Union. The new name, which features the word “community,” better reflects our field of membership and will enable us to continue to grow.
May 2016, Shell Community Federal Credit Union begins commerce as Midwest Members Credit Union. As the credit union continues to grow and reach out to new communities! It is important that potential member-owners understand what our credit union is. An inclusive financial cooperative that remains committed to serving the people within our area communities. The selection of the name Midwest Members Credit Union came as a result of our evaluation of the marketplace under the leadership of the Board of Directors and the commitment of our staff. We wanted a name that reflected our commitment of helping members achieve their financial goals at all stages of their life. Our name is changing but our commitment to you remains the same
The founding members of our credit union had the vision to invest in the financial future of the communities we serve. We are proud of that history and look forward to honoring that vision by serving more of our neighbors. We invite you to share in that vision as we embark on this new journey together.
